WHAT TO SEE IN THE OLD TOWN

San Pellegrino district

This is the medieval heart of Viterbo, one of the largest in Europe, with its peperino houses, characteristic profferli (typical external staircases), arches and towers. Perfect for a stroll through evocative alleyways.

Palazzo dei Papi and Loggia delle Benedizioni

One of the symbols of the city, seat of the first conclave in history (1268-1271). The Loggia delle Benedizioni offers a splendid view over the city.

Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Located next to the Palace of the Popes, it has Romanesque architecture with Renaissance interiors. Inside is the tomb of Pope John XXI.

Piazza del Plebiscito

Called ‘Piazza del Comune’ by the people of Viterbo, it houses the Palazzo dei Priori with splendid frescoes. Inside the building of the Comune di Viterbo you will find a splendid terrace with a view over the city.

Church of the Gonfalone

A small Baroque jewel located in the heart of the historic centre. It preserves valuable paintings and a cosy and evocative atmosphere.

Sanctuary of Santa Rosa

A place of worship dedicated to the city’s patron saint, linked to the traditional Macchina di Santa Rosa, a spectacular procession held on 3 September.

Temperatures range from around 40° to 60° at the source, which is why the thermal facilities in Viterbo are frequented from autumn until the end of spring. We advise you to bring slippers, a bathrobe and a beach towel, the latter for sunbathing during the hottest periods.
